The Truth about Organic Flax Seed Oil

Lately I have heard people being advised that organic flax seed oil is the ultimate source of healthy omega fatty acids for the last time, and I am here to set the record straight.  While it is true that this plant based oil is full of fatty acids, not all of the acids present are as healthy for you as they should be.  All omega fatty acids are necessary, but it is omega 3 fatty acids specifically that you want in your diet.

Flax seed oil, or linseed oil, has a high omega 3 content, but has about an equal number of omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids.  The positive attributes of the omega 3s found in flaxseed oil are literally cancelled out by the negative attributes of the omega 6 and 9 fatty acids.  A lot of people don’t realize that some of the omega fatty acids can actually cause you harm if there is an over abundance of them.

The omega 9 fatty acids in organic flax seed oil have been found to be associated with the development of breast cancer.  These fatty acids are not essential to your diet, as the body can produce the entire omega 9s that it needs from unsaturated fat.  The risk posed by an overabundance of omega 9 fatty acids pales in comparison with the dangers you face from having excessively high levels of omega 6s.

It is very difficult for us not to develop high levels of omega 6s, because the diet we typically follow provides us with 10 to 30 times more omega 6 fatty acids than it does omega 3s.  Our staple foods have become beef, poultry, eggs, cereals, whole grains, and far too many baked goods, but what choice do we have.  We have poisoned the fish that are our primary source of omega 3s, and so we cannot eat as much as we need.

Fish would be a far better source of healthy, essential fatty acids than organic flax seed oil if they did not possess high levels of mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel, furans, dioxins, and PCBs.  While still safe too eat occasionally, fish can no longer allow us to swing the balance between our omega 3s and omega 6s.  The only way we can accomplish this is through supplementing our diets with a quality fish oil product.

By consuming purified, concentrated fish oil instead of organic flax seed oil, you can prevent the development of the many ailments that high omega 6 levels can cause.  You can avoid allergies, asthma, arthritis, gout, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes type 2.  You will also be able to ward off depression and memory loss, and be able to treat ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia.

Organic Cacao

Is there really something like inorganic cacao? Inorganic is the definition of something that isn’t. In most cases, inorganic would simply mean not alive. It seems counterintuitive to not select organic cacao, or Theobroma cacao, given the incredible properties of this bean. What is referred to in this case, specifically, is not the bean itself, but the method by which it is processed. The closer we are to the bean in its most natural state, the better the cacao is for our health. Organic cacao then would refer to the unadulterated bean and the incredible health benefits it would offer.
This author has had the distinct advantage of having grown up in two countries. As a teenager, I became aware of the fact that my eyes were always bluer in Germany than they were when I was in the United States for a while. After some research, I believe I understand the cause of this unique phenomenon. In the 1980’s quite a bit of press was given to the European Union’s blocking of beef from America, labeling it as unfit for human consumption. Truth is that much American food is riddled with pesticides and processed beyond recognition. In Germany, I was used to foods that were closer to their “original” state, as it were. My bread was courser and tended to go bad more quickly, but, as I learned, it also contained many more nutrients than the American version, which often had to have nutrients added back in after the processing. There is a simple truth we must accept – the more processing our food undertakes, the more of the nutrients are depleted.
The same is true of cacao. The more processed, into chocolate and cocoa, adding fats and fillers and, generally sugar, the less the healthful benefits remain. Thus, the closer we are to consuming cacao in its most natural form, the better its properties. Cacao, indeed, contains a multitude of nutrients. Phenylethylamine, for example, has a unique side effect in the body. When consumed, one becomes both calm and alert at the same time. The Department of Metabolism and Nutrition, in Madrid, Spain, reported that cacao’s “the glucose retardation index of cocoa . . . were similar to other natural commercial insoluble fibres.” In other words, the good fiber in cacao helped keep glucose levels down.
In order for cacao to be marketed organic, it must be certified as organic. True organic cacao contains many nutrients we do not usually consider, making it truly a beneficial part of any diet. The key is less is more. The less processed out cacao, the more we will reap its benefits.

Health food stores have always been mysterious places. Back in the late 1970’s, early 1980’s, health food stores occupied a small niche in society that was close to being underground. They came along on the heels of the hippy movement of the 60’s and often served as a place for communes to sell their homegrown wares. The health food stores smelled of herbs, incense and a few other things that generally defied description. There were strange and exotic foods from all over the globe, all of them claiming to be organic or free range. There were things like granola, soymilk, goat’s milk, tofu and wheat grass juice. You could find books on such subjects as natural healing, crystal therapy and composting.
