Visit A Health Food Store Today

Posted on March 10, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Health food stores have always been mysterious places. Back in the late 1970’s, early 1980’s, health food stores occupied a small niche in society that was close to being underground. They came along on the heels of the hippy movement of the 60’s and often served as a place for communes to sell their homegrown wares. The health food stores smelled of herbs, incense and a few other things that generally defied description. There were strange and exotic foods from all over the globe, all of them claiming to be organic or free range. There were things like granola, soymilk, goat’s milk, tofu and wheat grass juice. You could find books on such subjects as natural healing, crystal therapy and composting.

Wild Oats is a franchise in many cities and when you go into the store, you can tell right away that the basic Mom and Pop operation had changed. This particular chain began eighteen years ago in Boulder, Colorado and has expanded over the years to include more than 110 stores in 24 states and British Columbia. It is clear to see how this company became the standard for the organic market industry.

At first glance, their store looks like any other large grocery store, and you can probably find many of the same items that you would in a standard grocery store – but with one twist. Everything is organic. Usually when you hear the word organic, you might think two things; bland and expensive. However, with all the options and improvements in the way of organic foods are produced, there are many items that are very tasty, and the prices have become comparable to those of a conventional grocery store.

The overall concept of the health food store hasn’t changed. They still offer a wide range of organic foods and herbal remedies. They are filled with all kinds of products to heal the body, mind and spirit. You can find aromatherapy candles, essential oils, books, tapes, and DVD’s on meditation and yoga. You can take cooking classes and learn how to make your own herbal remedies. There are still aisles dedicated to environmentally safe products for household cleaning and recycling.

Some additions are a pleasant surprise, though. There can be four different “deli” counters. There is usually a butcher counter with free-range chicken and beef and a plethora of fresh seafood. Another counter may display an array of amazing baked goods (bagels, cakes and pastries), and in many stores there is yet another section that caters full meals for a quick healthy lunch or a dinner party. The modern health food store also had a section for wine and beer, an astounding array of cheeses, and an extensive frozen foods section.

It is good to see how far the basic health food store has come. Sure you can still find the small ones if you look for them, but like so many other things these days, big corporations have taken over and created franchises that offer more for less. Buying in bulk allows the stores to get better discounts and pass the savings on to the consumer.

Understanding the Vegetarian Food Pyramid

Posted on March 10, 2010 at 3:00 am

There are many variations to the food pyramid and one of the most popular variations is the vegetarian food pyramid. If you’re on such diet, you can still meet your nutritional needs with a well-planned diet. It’s untrue that vegans are at risk of suffering from nutritional deficiency. Note that each food group in the vegan diet pyramid is unique and no group can replace the other. In other words, they are equally important. As a general rule, your main source of calories (which translates into energy) should come from the bottom three levels of the pyramid guide.

The major food groups in the diet are basically whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, and alternative groups (i.e. non-fat milk, fresh cheese, and yogurt). Within these groups, you should consume whole grains liberally; consume vegetables and fruits generously while for legumes and foods in alternative group, consume them moderately. Like all food guide advice, elements such as salt, sugar, and oil can be included but they should be consumed sparingly. As vegans do not consume meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products, they can find nutritional replacements in different leafy plants. For example, iron (commonly found in meat) can also be found in tofu and leafy vegetables. As for protein in meat and fish, it can be substituted with legumes and lentils. Always try to choose low-fat protein sources (usually plant-based foods).

Calcium-fortified soy can also be used to replace milk. It is a good choice as it is low-fat and cholesterol-free. As a vegan, you can still enjoy many foods such as pizza, lasagna, and pasta. The ingredients changed slightly and it’ll taste just as great. Many vegetarian food products today may even look (and taste) like non-vegetarian ones, but they are lower in fat and contain no cholesterol.

A vegetarian food pyramid or vegan diet pyramid allows vegans to determine the best food combination when planning for their diet. You can still plan healthy and delicious meals with a little creativity. Being a vegan is not boring!

Raw Food Benefits

Posted on March 9, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Why would anyone want to change to Raw Foods when they can take pleasure in eating sweet cake, cookies, ice cream, salty chips, soda or other fatty foods loaded with flavor? There is a very good reason: to live a happier, healthier lifestyle with plenty of energy, that’s why.

Just what does someone eat on a raw foods diet? Eating uncooked and unprocessed foods as a large percentage of the diet is what most people do and they often prefer organic raw foods. The prevailing mind set is why eat fresh, raw foods if they have been contaminated with inorganic chemicals.

There is more than one type of raw foods diet. In some only fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are acceptable. Others may allow meat, fish and some dairy foods as a protein source. It’s best if foods are eaten uncooked but foods that are cooked should be lightly heated. If food is heated above a certain high temperature valuable nutrients are destroyed and that would totally defeat the purpose.

People who choose to change to Raw Foods do so because of the benefits. Some may feel it’s a sacrifice in the beginning but eventually when they are healthy and full of energy it no longer feels that way.

These are raw foods benefits:

Your body will be less prone to sickness due to a healthier immune system. Contains live enzymes to aid in your digestion and improve metabolism. You will be able to maintain a healthy body weight due to fewer calories consumed. Healthy intestinal flora will improve your digestion. You will be more energetic. The fibres in raw food are called cellulose. They are necessary when it comes to losing weight. Raw vegetables are an excellent and natural resource for a clear skin. Eating raw vegetables is the best anti-aging treatment as it maintains the hormone levels in the body.

A change in any diet requires active awareness but there are several things you should be aware of if you decide to start eating raw foods as a primary part of your diet.

It requires considerably more time because you have to prepare meals from scratch. If you like to eat out it will take discipline since most restaurants don’t offer this dietary option. At the start you may experience an increased appetite as your body adjust to the changes. You may experience signs of detoxification such as headaches, nausea and other symptoms.

Changing to raw foods can be a challenge but in the end the rewards should be very satisfying.

So, please try to include at least few raw food items maintained above in your daily diet to stay healthy and live longer.

Important Note: If you have any type of medical condition or you are pregnant you should consult your doctor first.

Caution: Wash the raw foods thoroughly before eating.

A Diet Primer for Health Food and Vitamins

Posted on March 9, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Quite often, we want to eat healthier but don’t know exactly how to start. Sometimes food you think might be good may in fact not be right for you, and vice-versa. This article looks at some simple diet changes you can start to make right away that will improve your overall health.

Whole Wheat Products

One of the simplest changes you can make is to start eating more whole grain foods instead of those made with white processed flour. Why is this? The whole grain variety has retained more of the nutrients and it breaks down much more slowly in your body. This avoids sudden spikes in your blood sugar level, which can lead to diabetes in the long run.

Heart Healthy Foods

Heart disease is one of the biggest health problems we face. Frequently caused by blood clots in you arteries, this can be alleviated by eating some of the right foods. Try eating things like oatmeal, blueberries, and soy products like tofu. Even a daily glass of red wine or some dark chocolate has been found to be good for your heart.

Drink More Water

We’ve often been told we should drink 8 glasses of water each day, but how many of us actually do? Drinking water is a great way to help you lose weight. Water helps the body metabolize stored fat. Water is also great for your skin – it helps to keep it clear and healthy-looking. Start drinking more water today!

Eat More Vegetables

Common vegetables like carrots, broccoli and spinach contain carotenoids, which are thought to protect against cancer. Vegetables generally provide excellent health food and vitamins essential to your well-being. A simple way to increase your intake is to serve more than one vegetable with your meals.

Fruits Are Fine!

Like vegetables, fruit is an excellent source of vitamins and other nutrients. Eating fruit can help you lose weight and also prevent illness. Apples, bananas and melons are particularly good for you. Try introducing some of these fruits at meal times. Bananas go well with your cereal in the morning, and fruit in general can make a great dessert at the end of your meals.

Fish Is Good For You

Cold water fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines contain omega-3 fats. These fats are essential but they cannot be produced by the body, and must be obtained from foods. Fish is also a good source of protein low in calories and saturated fat. Try a tuna sandwich next time you have lunch!

Spare the Meat

Red meat like beef is very popular in many of our diets, and it is high in protein and essential amino acids. However it can contain a lot of saturated fat. This doesn’t mean we have to give up this summertime BBQ favorite. Simply look for the lean cuts and stay away from the fatty ones like rib-eye.

There is much more we could say on the topic of health food and vitamins. But just by following these simple suggestions you will be well on you way to a healthier diet. The many benefits you will see from increasing your intake of health food and vitamins include weight control, more energy and a reduced risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

A Guide to the Vegetarian Food Pyramid

Posted on March 9, 2010 at 11:35 am

Being a vegetarian means facing greater challenges in providing enough nutrients to your body. Health care specialists have actually created a vegetarian food pyramid that helps vegetarians pinpoint the foods they should eat to maintain good health. Vegan or not, every person can take some lessons from the guide.

The pyramid was developed by Arizona State University researchers and, like the omnivorous food pyramid, comprises 5 layers. Naturally, dairy and meat products are omitted from the vegetarian version. Instead, it contains whole grains, protein foods, nuts and seeds, vegetables and fruits as well as oils a vegetarian should consume. Even though it’s a healthier lifestyle choice, going vegetarian doesn’t mean a person is free from portion control measures, especially if they’re overweight.

In medicine, there is no magic bullet or panacea that can cure all that ails mankind. Similarly, vegetarians shouldn’t rely on just one type of food to provide all the nutrients they require. In fact, constantly consuming the same sort of food every single day can precipitate food sensitivity and allergy issues. The vegetarian food pyramid helps in this respect by providing a variety of choices and combinations for a vegetarian to choose from.

Aside from sensible portion control, being vegetarian doesn’t mean dooming oneself to a lifetime of bland rabbit food. Vegetables and grains can be cooked and prepared in a variety of interesting and tasty ways. The first step to take is to practice on vegetarian foods that are more familiar before branching out to try something more adventurous. Consider peanuts a stepping stone to Tempe, the fermented soybean patty that is a good source of protein.

The vegetarian food pyramid is only a guideline for a different lifestyle. For novices, it’s best to take things slowly and sensibly. Do as much reading on the subject as you can and you might surprise yourself with the recipes you eventually come up with!

What is the Food Web of the Grey Wolf

Posted on March 9, 2010 at 2:51 am

The Food Guide Pyramid is one manner for everyone to read how to eat healthy. A rainbow of colored, vertical stripes stands for the five food groups plus fats and oils. Here is what the colors stand for: orange = grains green = vegetables red = fruits yellow = fats and oils blue = milk and dairy products purple = meat, beans, fish, and nuts The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) modified the pyramid in spring 2005 because they wanted to do a more enhanced job of narrating to Americans how to be healthy and compare with food in the 1600’s. The agency later released a special variation for children. On this website you will observe a girl ascending the staircase up the side of the pyramid. That is an example of showing kids how important it is to exercise and be active every day. Did you hear about foods beginning with x ? From another perspective, play a lot! The stairs are also a way of showing that you can make changes in stages to be more healthy. One step at a time, understand? A very big problem of the world is: How to loose weight? The Pyramid Speaks to us in several ways. Let us all confront a few of the additional topics this new symbol is trying to pass on: A person should eat a wide variety of foods. A balanced diet is one that makes use of all the food groups. From another perspective, have foods from every color, every day. We should eat less of some foods, and extra of others. You can see that the bands for meat and protein are purple and oils are yellow and less pronounced than the other ones. dolphin’s food chain. The reason is because you need less of those varieties of foods than your need of fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy foods. What is the food web of the grey wolf. Your family also can see the bands start out fatter and get skinnier as they approach the top side. That is designed to show you that not all foods are made as good as others, even within a fit food group like fruit. Sometimes, apple pie might be in that thin section of the fruit band because it has a lot of added sugar and fat. A whole apple would be turn up in the broad part for you can eat more of those in a fit eating regimen.
